Green Energy Information PDF Print E-mail

green-energy-informationCorporate America realizes the importance of reducing its environmental impact on the earth.  Green Energy is one way to achieve that goal.  The term “Green Energy” is used to describe energy that is environmentally friendly utilizing renewable, low-carbon emitting sources, i.e., non-polluting.  Examples of this are geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro energy.  Nuclear power is may also be considered a source of green energy.  Green energy lowers carbon emissions and creates less pollution because it is supplied in whole or in part from renewable energy sources.

Green energy is often thought of in regards to electricity.  Electricity causes more air pollution than any other industry in the United States.  Businesses often buy green energy to support further development and to reduce the environmental impact their company has on the environment.  It is also a way to increase the national’s energy independence.

Through your purchase of green power, you improve human health, preserve the earth for future generations, reduce environmental impact, and conserve finite fossil resources.  Green Power does cost more to purchase, even though most renewable resources used for “green” power are free.  However, the technology used to transform wind or the sun into power is not free.  It typically costs an extra one to two cents per kilowatt/hour; however this varies.

Green power is generated and then fed into the electrical grid of the RTOs (Regional Transmission Organizations).  Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are then issued by the RTOs to green power suppliers assuring that the power that was fed into the grid has been generated from green power.  A REC is a tradeable environmental commodity which represents proof that 1 mWh of electricity was generated from a renewable energy source.  The price of a REC fluctuates.  The price is determined by supply and demand, the type of power that was used, and whether the REC is used for RPS (Renewable Portfolio Standard) compliance. Purchasing RECs, is a way for businesses to support green energy.

Nania Energy offers a range of options for purchasing green power.  Our clients have purchased approximately 150,000,000 kWh of renewable energy.  This renewable energy purchase avoids 208,800,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions from conventional power plants using nonrenewable fossil fuels.  Also, CO2 emissions avoided compares to:

  • NOT driving approximately 20,500 passenger cars for one year
  • Approximately 12,157 households’ electricity use for one year
  • 78,911 acres of pine or fir forests storing carbon for one year
  • 31,877 tons of waste recycled instead of put into a landfill

Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is energy that can be continually replenished.  Because of volatility in the energy market, alternate energy resources have been actively researched.  Examples of renewable energy are wind energy and solar energy.

Advantages of using renewable energy are that these energy sources are non-polluting.  Greenhouse gas emissions can be lowered by using electricity created by renewable energy in lieu of fossil-fuel power plants.

Solar Energy

The sun’s energy is used to create solar power which is used to provide heat, light, hot water, and electricity.  1% of U.S. energy is currently used for the U.S. energy’s needs, but this percentage should increase with the development of new technologies.  Solar energy can be converted into heat energy (therms) and used to heat water or homes.  Solar power can also be converted to electricity.  Solar power is the most available renewable energy source.

Wind power is created by turning wind energy into power, such as electricity, using wind turbines.  Wind power plants, also known as wind farms, use numerous wind machines positioned over a large area to generate electricity.  1.5% of electricity used world-wide is created using wind power.

Hydro Energy

Hydro energy is a renewable energy source using the energy of flowing water to generate power.  Hydro energy is used to power turbines that produce electricity.  This energy source produces the most electricity in the United States.  If you understand the water cycle, then you can understand hydropower.

Hydro EnergyIn the water cycle:

  • Solar energy heats water on the surface, causing the water to evaporate.
  • The water vapor then condenses into clouds and then falls back onto the earth as precipitation (rain and snow).
  • The water flows through rivers and back into the oceans.  The water then evaporates, and the cycle starts over again.

Biopower

biopowerBiopower is the use of biomass to generate electricity.  Biomass is plant materials and animal waste that is used as fuel.  This includes trees, crops, algae and other plants.  It also includes sludge, manure, and organic household waste.  The biomass is burned.  The heat from this process is used to boil water.  The energy from the steam that is produced is used to turn turbines and generators.
